About
My name is Evelyn Richardson. I offer services in copy editing and proofreading, online language tutoring, university entry, copywriting, and translating (Arabic–English and English–Arabic). I am originally from the UK, and currently live between London and Cairo. My CV may be accessed here.
I have a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago. After receiving my PhD in 2022, I taught for two years as a Humanities Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago. My first degree was in Classics and Arabic from Oxford University, and I also have master’s degrees from Oxford and SOAS.
I maintain a research program as an independent scholar working across modern Arabic literature, the modern history of the Middle East, and the reception of Greek and Latin literature in Arabic and European languages. My latest publication is an article in the International Journal of Middle East Studies on the first published work of ancient history in Arabic.
I offer tutoring in Latin, Ancient Greek, Modern Standard Arabic, Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, and in preparation for university applications. My tutoring work has included teaching secondary school students, university students, and adult learners. I have helped prepare individuals for exams from GCSE through A Level and IB DP to university exams. I have also taught adult learners Latin and Greek from scratch. My copy editing and proofreading experience includes working on journal articles, master’s and doctoral theses, and conference papers. Since August 2024, I have served as the English-language copy editor for the journal Égypte Soudan mondes arabes (ESMA). I am comfortable working across all humanities and social sciences fields, in both US and UK English, and according to whichever style guide you are following. I am available for translation jobs of all kinds between Arabic and English. My specialism is literary and academic translation, but I have experience translating official papers, legal documents, commercial literature, and news articles.
I also take on occasional copywriting jobs, particularly where an individual or organization wants a copywriter who will produce original rather than AI-generated copy. I recently prepared the copy for the website of an independent private hospital in the UK.
